How To Be Alone and Its Benefits

Do you like being alone? Have you ever wondered if being alone is better? Do you enjoy spending time with yourself? Solitude often gets a bad reputation as people often find themselves with nothing to do and start overthinking in order to pass time which is counter productive. First and foremost you should know there is a difference in being alone and being lonely; being alone is an objective statement as you are alone as in there is no one around you but being lonely is subjective as it is a feeling, it is the feeling that even with so many people, you feel lost. Loneliness involves being isolated despite wanting social connections, where being alone means taking time for yourself between regular social interactions. Choosing to be alone at times can be rejuvenating, but the important variables are that it is something you choose and something you enjoy. Being alone is harmful if it feels like a punishment or if you feel excluded from social connections.

If you are used to being around people constantly, spending time alone can be a challenge but there are ways to make it easier such as listening to music or watching movies to get used to being with yourself. If you are unsure what to do when you are alone, here are some suggestions; firstly, you can always cook or order out which allows you to have whatever you want and gives you a chance to eat in peace without worry or other distractions. Secondly, you can learn a new skill, with the current situation, it is not a good idea to go out and being locked in the house can get boring so be productive and learn a new skill online which will be beneficial and will also help you pass time. Lastly, you can always do something creative such as journaling or creating a vision board which will cause you to gain insight within you as well while helping you relax and bringing out your creative side.

There are many benefits of being alone as it gives you a chance to look within and understand yourself in a way you could not otherwise. Some benefits of being alone are -

  1. It Can Improve Concentration and Memory

When you are with other people, you tend to get distracted more and you think that if you miss something, some other person will fill in the gaps and you displace your work. This is also called social loafing. Being alone allows you to focus and do the work yourself independently which makes you remember and understand more.

  1. It Boosts Creativity

Research shows that when a person is alone and given a problem, they tend to think differently and understand better whereas when put into a group, they conform to the answers and thinking process to those around them which causes them to lose their individuality.

  1. It Makes Your Interests a Priority

Being alone is crucial for self development and understanding yourself. While being with others, you have to sometimes do as they want or do things you dislike but being alone allows you to put yourself first and do as you please in the way you feel the most comfortable with.

  1. It Improves Your Relationships

Working on yourself is crucial in relationships be it a romantic relationship or with friends or family. Unless you are happy and what you want to be, you will not be your best in these relationships. Moreover, everyone needs space at times and crowding each other can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts.

Whether you are an introvert who thrives on solitude or a gregarious extrovert who loves to socialize, a little high-quality time to yourself can be good for your overall well-being. The trick is to remember that this alone time is for focusing on you—for cultivating your passions, finding new inspirations, getting to know yourself better, or even engaging in some much-needed rest and relaxation.
