Spirituality In Relation To Psychology

Do you believe in something greater than yourself? Does science contradict spirituality? How does spirituality relate to psychology in different aspects? According to the Oxford Dictionary, Spirituality means ‘relating to the human spirit as opposed to physical things; however, the definition of spirituality of Psychology is about discovering your own inner awareness. Many people assume that these two are separate entities but in fact, spirituality is a part of psychology that helps people gain insight and personal development. Many rehabilitation centers focus on spiritual values that are used to help people develop themselves and help them adapt to society in a peaceful manner.

In the start, psychologists avoided spirituality as a clinical treatment as the pioneers of psychology at that time were still not clear as to how the two were linked and also many psychologists lacked training in this area. Whereas, now psychologists offer various treatments involving psychology to those who require or opt for it. Psychologists are ethically obliged to be respectful and attentive to the cultural diversity of their clients, and religion and spirituality contribute to our personal and social identities. Research shows that many people would like to discuss their matters of faith with psychologists as it helps them define their beliefs and thought process in a better manner. Psychologists are now developing and evaluating a variety of spiritually integrated approaches to treatment, including: forgiveness programs to help divorced people come to terms with bitterness and anger; treatments for women with eating disorders that draw on their spiritual resources; and programs that help drug abusers re-connect to their higher selves. These programs are still in their early stages of development, but the preliminary results are promising.

Psychology has opened up to various practices such as meditation and spirituality and has evolved over time to help and reach out to more people so that the clients are able to have better results with practice. Each of these phenomena has deep roots in Eastern and Western religious traditions and philosophies that have spread throughout the world. Spirituality in psychology helps lead to self awareness and insight which can help patients to have a deeper understanding of themselves as well as improve their physical well being. These two subjects may be separate but are also interconnected with each other so that we can have the best of both worlds and this leads to various practices that can help with mental and physical health.
